Jolie Callan

The story of one photo. Jolie Callan.

Jolie Callan was a petite 18-year-old from Alabama. She was only six feet tall, but she was a popular girl with a big heart. She had just graduated from high school and her immediate plans were to leave home to go to college. But before she took the next step in her life, Jolie decided to break up with her selfish and jealous boyfriend Loren Bruner, who wanted her to spend all her time only with him and his friends. She had tried several times to break up their almost year-long relationship, but he had always threatened her that he would kill himself if she dumped him. This time was different. Despite countless calls, threats and requests from Brunner, Callan still broke up with him.

It took a few weeks before Lohner came to terms with the fact that it was over between them. On 29 August 2015, Brunner offered to go camping together as friends. Callan hesitated, but agreed to go. She jokingly wrote to her friend: "If anything happens to me, you'll know who I was with".

Jolie Callan and her final journey.

The girl hiked with Brunner the next day. Before and during the trek up Mount Cheaha, Alabama, Brunner took four photos of his ex-lover and posted them on his Instagram.
The first photo shows Callan in Brunner's car with his dog Kiba. He captioned it, "On the way to the hike. <3 @joleeisakitten" The second photo shows Callan with Brunner's dog and he hinted: "Kiba dragging @joleeisakitten on a mission."

In the last photo, Callan is standing on a rocky cliff with his back to Brunner taking pictures of nature. He captioned the photo as, "Oh, @joleeisakitten is a photographer.

After the last photo, Brunner shot Callan twice, once in the back and the second time between the eyes, after turning her body over. He then pushed her lifeless body off the 100-metre cliff where she had last stood while taking the photos.

Later that evening Brunner called 911 to report the murder he had committed. In the recorded call, which was played in a courtroom in July 2017, Brunner calmly said: "I want to turn myself in for the murder of my ex-girlfriend Jolie Callan, which occurred most recently in Mount Cheaha." He told the dispatcher the location of Callan's body.

Authorities searched the area that Brunner described and found Callan's body at the foot of a cliff on the Pinhoti Trail. Officers discovered the murder scene, where a cold-blooded Brunner shot Callan twice just for not taking him back. Police recovered the murder weapon, a Bear Claw .22 calibre air rifle.

Brunner later told investigators that he and Callan had had a suicide pact and had simply complied with her request. He explained that he was supposed to commit suicide after her, but could not commit suicide.
However, investigators found nothing in Callan's life to suggest depression or suicidal behaviour. The girl was making plans for the future and there was no suicide note. Investigators concluded that Brunner's story was made up and that he had lured his girlfriend up the mountain to kill her.

Brunner initially pleaded not guilty to murder, but he soon changed his position and pleaded guilty.

Brunner was sentenced to 52 years in prison. Callan's father was gladthat justice had been served. He suffered a stroke after learning that his daughter had been murdered. After the verdict, he told Britain's Mirror news company: "She was a nice sweet girl. I think today she smiles."
